A – Bedside Table

This project originates from a personal wish and need. I wanted to design a piece of furniture, as my recent work had all been on a smaller scale. And since I needed a bedside table, I decided to turn it into a project.
My goal was to create a sense of privacy without resorting to drawers. By simply changing the normal direction of the second shelf's opening, I made it easily accessible from the bed side while concealing its content from direct view. At the same time, I wanted to make full use of the material and keep the making process simple. The table is made from six equally sized pieces, all cut from a single standard sheet of birch plywood, with zero offcut.
All connections are hidden, yet the piece can be easily disassembled and reassembled for storing, moving or shipping flat-pack.
I wasn’t sure whether to refine it further, but I actually find its straightforwardness rather charming.
Fun fact: when thinking about a name, I liked the idea of emphasizing the object’s ordinary nature. I settled on the most generic title, A Bedside Table, and only later realized the side profiles of the plywood form the letter A. Nice coincidence.
